GALLERY THEMES

I have several distinct series that I work in most of the time. Occasionally I return to traditional art and revive old styles that have become new and refreshed.

In the past I worked a lot in oils, charcoal, oil pastels, inks and sepia colors, but my favorite choice is working with natural dyes. They deliver intense and extremely versatile colour giving me joy, surprise and even slight rage at times. They are like no other medium I have used before.

I began working with natural dyes in 1989 after instruction in Malaysia in the traditional resist method. This was using wax to draw the form then paint in the desired outline using dyes. I would use watercolor techniques plus mixing and shading my subject as I would with acrylics or oils.

After following the traditional method for a few months, I began to experiment with many different ways to use the dyes, and made up my own rules and ways of getting remarkable results on fabric or paper. I did not like to call this work "mixed media' so coined the word ”AQUATIQUE” to describe it.

My art studio really is my ‘art lab’ and to be completely honest I sometimes do things accidentally that cannot be repeated and I wish that I could because of the unique results it produced. From this “lab” several series have been produced and the adventure continues.
